About the Journal

Focus and Scope

The Canadian Journal of Nonprofit and Social Economy Research / Revue canadienne de re­cherche sur les OSBL et l'économie sociale welcomes a wide range of original submissions in English or French that focus on nonprofit organizations (NPO) and the social economy.

Examples of the areas of interest are: management of nonprofit organizations, governance, philanthropy, charities, fundraising, volunteering and giving, social economy, social enterprises, social entrepreneurship, community and international economic development, co-operatives, third sector, voluntary sector, civil society, social responsibility, sustainability, citizen engagement, social movements, social innovation, public and private sector relationships, social and environmental accounting, and policy.

Our vision is to embrace a variety of scholarly fields including business and management, public administration, sociology, anthropology, economics, social work, history, law, education, psychology, political science.

The Canadian Journal of Nonprofit and Social Economy Research / Revue canadienne de re­cherche sur les OSBL et l'économie sociale is or has been sponsored by the Institute of Nonprofit Studies, Mount Royal University; the Sprott Centre for Social Enterprises, Carleton University; the Social Economy Centre, University of Toronto and the Hub of the Social Economy Suite, University of Victoria, and a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council Aid to Scholarly Journals grant.

Publishing Ethics

Ethical standards for publication exist to ensure high-quality scientific publications, public trust in scientific findings, and that people receive credit for their ideas. The Canadian Journal of Nonprofit and Social Economy Research / Revue canadienne de re¬cherche sur les OSBL et l'économie sociale complies with the guidelines and best practices set forth by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE). This includes, but is not limited to:

Editors’ Responsibilities:
• Evaluate manuscripts solely on the basis of intellectual content.
• Maintain confidentiality by not disclosing any information about the author, except to editors, editorial board members and/or the publisher, if appropriate.
• Maintain confidentiality by not disclosing any information about the submitted manuscript, except to potential reviewers, editors, editorial board members and/or the publisher, if appropriate, until that manuscript has been rejected or published.
• Ensure that each submission is anonymously reviewed by at least two qualified peer reviewers.
• Take responsive action when there are ethical or conflict-of-interest concerns raised regarding a submitted manuscript or published paper. These actions will be determined on a case-by-case basis, and may result in a number of outcomes, including (but not limited to) amending the paper, publishing an erratum document or retracting the paper.

Author’s Responsibilities:
• Ensure that their manuscript adheres to the highest standard of academic integrity and ethical practice.
• Alert the editor(s) to any potential conflict(s) of interest related to the manuscript and/or study.
• Provide the editor(s) with a letter stating that the manuscript is original material that has not been published and is not currently being considered for publication elsewhere.
• Ensure that the work of others is cited and/or quoted accurately and completely. Plagiarism takes many forms. It is the author’s responsibility to ensure that their manuscript does not contain any plagiarized content.
• Represent the research data that underlies the manuscript accurately.
• Limit authorship to individuals who made a significant contribution to the study and/or manuscript. Publication has been approved by all co-authors and responsible authorities at the organization where the work has been carried out.
• The author has obtained the permission of the copyright holder for the inclusion of any third party material, including images, in the text.
• Report errors or inaccuracies in the manuscript to the editor immediately upon discovery so that efforts can be made to correct or retract the paper.

Reviewer’s Responsibilities
• Peer reviewers will agree to review manuscripts only for which they have the subject expertise required to carry out a proper assessment and which they can assess in a timely manner.
• They will respect the confidentiality of peer review and not reveal any details of a manuscript or its review, during or after the peer-review process, beyond those that are released by the journal.

• They will be objective and constructive in their reviews, providing meaningful feedback that contributes to the academic rigour of the paper and assists the editor in making an editorial decision.
• Identify instances of unacknowledged sources within the manuscript to the best of their abilities.
• Alert editors of any potential conflicts of interest in reviewing the manuscript, including conflicts related to the authors of a manuscript, content of a manuscript or funding sources related to the study.

Peer Review

Articles submitted to CJNSER/ReCROES undergo double-blind peer review. Based on reviewer feedback, CJNSER/ReCROES's editors are responsible for the final publication decision.

Open Access Policy

This journal provides immediate open access to its content on the principle that making research freely available to the public supports a greater global exchange of knowledge.

Archiving

This journal utilizes the LOCKSS system to create a distributed archiving system among participating libraries and permits those libraries to create permanent archives of the journal for purposes of preservation and restoration.

Author Self-archiving Policy

Under the terms of the Creative Commons license, authors are permitted to post their work online in institutional/disciplinary repositories or on their own websites. Pre-print versions posted online should include a citation and link to the final published version in the Canadian Journal of Nonprofit and Social Economy Research as soon as the issue is available; post-print versions (including the final publisher's PDF) should include a citation and link to the journal's website.
